Lopez Melgarejo

Miguel Angel Lopez Melgarejo (Lakel) was born in Ubeda, province of Jaen, Spain, on January 5th, 1960. Son of the famous and reputed imaginary sculptor Sebastian Lopez del Moral (disciple of Francisco Palma Burgos), he takes his first steps in drawing, sculpture and painting in 1978, participating in several competitions and winning first prizes. His father dies at the age of 47, when he is 22 years old. He is initiated in the Sacred Mysteries, with specialization in Operative Mystique, in the year 1983, in Alicante. From 1983 to 1987 he goes through some mystical-spiritual experiences that will have a great influence in his artwork. Nowadays, he observes life with ironic passiveness and with the mysterious eyes of the soul, expressing himself especially through the silence of his paintings, respectful and conclusive, and also irreverent, transgressive and controversial; a result of his unavoidable elevation to the heavens and descent to the hells of the mind. Currently, he has totally moved away from contests, prizes, nominations, acknowledgments, artistic honours, and press and television.
