Art historians focus on the artistic exchanges and network interactions between Werefkin and other women artists of various nationalities who were active in her circle of associates and fellow artists between 1890 and 1918. Among the topics are Werefkin in Prerow 1911: the periphery as focus, the cosmopolitan approach as a constituent aspect of modernist thought, transcending gender: cross-dressing as a performative practice of women artists of he avant-garde, Maria Marc’s letters, Natalia Goncharova as an artistic innovator and inspiring muse, and the first modernist women artists in Latvia and their paths into the international art scene. The 16 papers emerged from a September 2014 conference in Bremen held in conjunction with a special exhibition of Werefkin’s art. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
