The generation of waste in teaching and research institutions in Brazil is a subject that is little discussed. In most universities, the management of waste generated in their routine activities is generally non-existent and, due to the lack of a supervisory body, improper disposal is still practiced. In today’s scenario, in which various segments of society are becoming increasingly concerned about sustainable development, universities cannot simply continue to comfortably ignore their position as waste generators, not least because this attitude directly undermines the role that the university itself plays when it assesses and blames the impact caused by other segments. Therefore, given the important role that universities play in society and the environmental importance of waste, and as a matter of consistent posture, the time has come for universities to implement their waste management programs, setting an example for society, promoting environmental education and guaranteeing the quality of life of future generations.
