Two Lives Intertwined
Rosie: Life is hard. Everyday is the same and it feels like I’m going nowhere. Finding joy anymore seems impossible. You know that feeling where you could be in a crowded room, yet be fully and completely alone? That’s how I always feel, and I’m so tired.
Sam: Life is hard. Everyday is the same. I watch my neighbors get adopted, but no one ever sees me. They walk past my cage like I’m invisible-and I’m starting to wish I was. I’m so tired.
When Rose’s therapist recommends she adopt an animal, she is reluctant. Rose has tried it all to help her depression, and nothing has worked. But fate has other plans in store.
Rose went to the animal shelter expecting to rescue a dog, but she never expected it would be Sam who rescues her.
Author Note: This is a semi-autobiographical contemporary fiction short-story that features heavy themes of mental health, depression, and the reality of life for animals in shelters. Please review the trigger warning list at the beginning of the story before reading, or on my website.
