A worthy companion to They Speak by Silences, Where Silence is Praise gives further insight into the peace of Carthusian spirituality.

The first section is made up of extracts from letters to a friend in an Italian university. The second is a collection of notes of guidance made by a confrère accustomed to discussing his spiritual problems with the author. The spirit of this guidance - calm, discerning, ever leading on to the heroism of love - is that of St Francis de Sales whom the author took as his model in the art of spiritual direction. These writings reveal the evident humanity of a man once prey to ambition, anger and pride, yet the overwhelming atmosphere is one of deep calm, the result of a life of prayer and humility, of constant striving to improve.
