It is evident that as she matures, she develops a sarcastic form of rebellion that has resulted as an outcome of her obvious disgust towards society.

Her one pillar of stability is found in her best friend Crimson. He has been secretly falling in love with her and their unnatural friendship fills the pages of the novel with a mystique and edging mystery. There is also this unfathomable sense of unconditional love that actually runs through the pages of the novel.

The novel deals with the heart-wrenching underlying theme of drug use that surfaced through the persona of Gabrielle’s younger sister, Summer, who is gradually becoming a drug addict.
