At six o'clock on a dark, misty October afternoon, Gerald Stapleton returns home to his bachelor apartment at Malmesbury Mansions. From the darkness of his own doorway, he is surprised to see a tall and beautiful woman descending the stairs, supporting herself with one hand against the wall and clasping her cloak close to her with the other - a look of fear on her face. A look which is apparently explained when, visiting his friend Lord Henry Rollestone in the flat above his, Stapleton finds that the peer has been murdered....
