The Cordele family, influential business owners in rural DeSoto county, are prime suspects when Laska discovers a bullet-ridden body near their property. Richard Rybicki, a former detective, retired from the Chicago Police Department in 2006. After becoming bored with fine dining, cheap bourbon and lounging on the crystal sands of Siesta Key, Florida, he began writing. The Pain Game, his first work of fiction (although many defense attorneys would dispute that fact), was published in 2016 and debuted the Sam Laska Crime Thriller series. His second novel, Where the Road Leads, continues the series in rousing fashion. He still lives near Siesta Key with his wife and dog and numerous bottles of fine bourbon.
