If you enjoy rhymes and like to pique the interest of your child reader, then My Silly Billy, Squeaky Cheeky, Floppy Poppy Family by Vanessa Jean Locke is a good selection for your family. This is the story of a special family that speaks to one another in rhyming phrases. They talk of getting out of bed and getting ready. They talk of telling one another good-bye and of dropping off a child at school. When a child grows tired and cranky, there is a rhyme for that; and when injured, rhyming words are given to soothe feelings. It's an interesting concept and young listeners will be captivated by the rhymes. Preschool children tend to think they are clever when rhyming words so this book should be something to stimulate that ability.
After finishing the story, the adult reader might give the child words and attempt to hold brief conversations using rhyming phrases. This will help the child understand the concept of rhyming and will also provide a game that is fun to engage in. Author Vanessa Locke has provided charming illustrations for the book and the images are sure to captivate a restless youngster. When talking about tickling, be prepared for a laugh or two! The child listener's curiosity will be piqued after just a couple of illustrations of the rhyming technique. Check out the book and see if maybe you have a rhyming toddler in your house!
