“To teach someone any subject adequately, the subject must be embedded in all the elements that give it meaning.”
Knowledge and meaning should never be separated. Any subject, from grammar to phonics has to be linked to personal interest and growth to be relevant to the child and make a difference in their lives. And only when it connects to the person, will the child remember it. Fairy tales have a tremendous emotive impact on younger children.
For children fairy tales are not mere fantasies. They are real. Fairy tales touch very deep sentiments, about growing up and achieving an ideal. While telling a story, young students will measure themselves by the actions and behavior of the central characters in the story. Understanding the different stages of this growth as well as the other aspects that appeal to the child, can help us inspire them for learning.
Fairy tales have a universal appeal, whether it is the way they deal with relationships, the growth process, the mysteries, or the moral questions that it raises. And this richness in attracting children makes fairy tales powerful tools in working with students to learn a foreign language.
“Our emotions are integral to learning. When we ignore the emotional components of any subject we teach, we actually deprive students of meaningfulness.” For younger children, fairytales offer this emotional connection and within this context we can connect to a wide variety of subject matter.
