　　維克多．雨果是法國著名詩人、小說家及劇作家。1822年，雨果發表第一部詩集《頌詩與雜詠集》（Odes et Poésies Diverses），之後20年餘，出版許多詩集、小說與劇作。於1862問世的《悲慘世界》（Les Misérables），被公認為19 世紀最偉大的小說，隱含雨果對社會與宗教生活的想法，他充滿熱情地描述理想社會的建立，也為低階層的人民奮筆疾書。

　　Jean Valjean, a poor man, was once imprisoned for a minor crime. After being released, he steals from Bishop Myriel as a form of revenge upon the world, but is forgiven by the bishop. Valjean finally repents and begins a new life under a different name, but he is arrested again later. He soon escapes from prison, however, and meets Fantine and her daughter Cosette, who strongly influence his life from then on. Though a historical novel, Les Misérables brims with Victor Hugo’s passion to create an ideal society, and has been enjoyed by readers since its publication.
