●The Persian cat

The neighbor three next to my home

Raises one Persian cat.

This cat should be in the summer of its life.

Its body is majestic and full of white hairs,

Long and bright!

Its white hairs in the breeze

Flutter gently,

Very powerful!

The cat often climbs to the high wall,

And squats there quietly.

It always looks down at the humans, the cars, the dogs,

And various others below its feet ,

Coming and going in the lane.

When I walk by there,

And look at each other face to face.

I always feel

Its eyes very sharp.

Its unsmiling expression,

Especially its closed mouth with two sides down,

Appears incomparable solemn

And incomparable dignified.

At this time,

I would have an illusion,

Wanting to kneel down,

And kowtow to him and say,

My King!

Long live!

Long live forever and ever!



●波斯貓

我家隔壁的再隔壁

養了一隻波斯貓

那是一隻應該正值壯年的貓

體態雄偉

全身披滿

長長的發著亮光的白毛

它的白毛在微風中

輕輕地飄動著

看起來

好不威風

它經常爬到高高的牆頭上

靜靜地蹲在那裡

俯視著腳下巷道來來往往的

人類　車類　狗類　以及其他諸類

當我走經那裡

與它面對面對看時

總覺得

它的眼神銳利無比

它那不茍言笑的神情

尤其是

它那二邊向下緊閉的嘴

顯得

無比的莊嚴與

無比的威嚴

這時候

我會有一種錯覺

想要跪下來

向它叩頭

吾皇

萬歲

萬萬歲

●The guard dog

Near the lane entrance there is a vacant land.

In the vacant land is tied a black Formosa dog

For guarding the saloon car of its master.

I have noticed the dog

Several months.

The dog is very dedicated to its duty.

It is usually found

The dog always stands there

Quietly and uprightly.

If a stranger is near to the car

The dog should yell out loudly.

Regardless of rainy days

Or sunny days

The dog has still stood there

Quietly and uprightly!

To my surprise,

Why can the dog be trained

To be so well!

How can it stand there

Quietly and uprightly

Whether in the heavy rain

Or under the burning sun.

Also to my surprise,

Why can its master

Let the dog be wetted by the rain and burned by the sun,

And still keeps untouched.

Concerning this case

The master is really not as good as his dog.

If the dog is classified as a beast

Then its master is

Worse than a beast.



●守護犬

巷子口有一塊空地

空地上綁著一隻黑色土狗

用來看守主人的轎車

我注意到這隻狗

已經有好幾個月了

這隻狗非常盡忠職守

平時看到它時

它總是靜靜地

筆直地站在那裡

有陌生人靠近車子時

它一定會大叫

無論

下雨天

大晴天

總是看到這隻狗

靜靜地筆直地

站在那裡

我感到很奇怪

這隻狗的修養

怎麼這麼好

在大雨中

在烈日下

它怎麼還能靜靜地

筆直地站在那裡

我也感到很奇怪

它的主人為何

任憑這隻狗

雨淋日晒

而能無動於衷

以這件事來論

主人真的不如這隻狗

這隻狗若是

禽獸

則它的主人就是

禽獸不如

一邊欣賞著鄉野的黃昏

一邊朗讀著中英對照的

印度詩人泰戈爾的詩集

雖然不是很懂得英文

卻總覺得泰戈爾的英文詩

非常美

至於美在那裡

就不知道了

這份美的感覺

三不五時就會浮現心頭

尤其在夜深人靜時

更是會有

泰戈爾在呼喚的幻覺

就是這份美的感覺

促使我

從已出版的三本文集中

選出四十篇

翻譯成英文

而成為這本文集

命名為老伙仔的抒情話

這實在是

自不量力之舉

希望有緣的讀者

能夠賜予指正

並加以寬諒

Preface（beyond one’s ability）

In my college years,

I often take a walk on the ridges of fields in the evening.

At this time, I always read the English poetry with

Chinese translation, written by Indian poet Tagore,

While enjoying the sunset of countryside.

Although, I do not well know English,

I really is touched deeply

By the beauty in the English poetry of Tagore.

As for, why it is beautiful,

I actually do not know!

This feeling of beauty

Frequently appears in my mind from time to time.

Especially in the dead of night,

There even is an illusion of calling from Tagore.

It is this feeling of beauty,

Why I would publish this English collected work,

Forty short assays selected and translated from

My three published collected works,

Named Lyrical words of one old guy.

It is really beyond my ability

To publish this English collected work.

I hope the readers by destiny

Could give me corrections and forgiveness

For the mistakes in this English collected work.
